Melodic Fission in Trance Music: The Perception of Interleaved Vocal and Non-Vocal Melodies

چکیده
While many studies have examined melodic fission of familiar and unfamiliar interleaved Western melodies, melodic fission in trance music, an electronic dance music genre, has not yet been studied. Melodic material is relatively constant throughout a trance song, while timbre, texture, and dynamics vary over time. In this study, participants listened to several clips of trance music with two or more competing melodic lines and evaluated which were melodic and harmonic. Answers were based primarily on how conjunct each line was, although some disjunct lines were segregated into

Data-Driven Exploration of Melodic Structure in Hindustani Music
Indian art music is quintessentially an improvisatory music form in which the line between ‘fixed’ and ‘free’ is extremely subtle. In a rāga performance, the melody is loosely constrained by the chosen composition but otherwise improvised in accordance with the rāga grammar. One of the melodic aspects that is governed by this grammar is the manner in which a melody evolves in time in the course...
متن کاملInfluence of Pitch Height on the Perception of Submissiveness and Threat in Musical Passages
Bolinger, Ohala, Morton and others have established that vocal pitch height is perceived to be associated with social signals of dominance and submissiveness: higher vocal pitch is associated with submissiveness, whereas lower vocal pitch is associated with social dominance. An experiment was carried out to test this relationship in the perception of non-vocal melodies. Results show a parallel ...
متن کاملEnhanced processing of vocal melodies in childhood.
Music cognition is typically studied with instrumental stimuli. Adults remember melodies better, however, when they are presented in a biologically significant timbre (i.e., the human voice) than in various instrumental timbres (Weiss, Trehub, & Schellenberg, 2012). We examined the impact of vocal timbre on children's processing of melodies. In Study 1, 9- to 11-year-olds listened to 16 unfamil...
متن کاملClinical investigations of receptive and expressive musical functions after stroke
There is a long tradition of investigating various disorders of musical abilities after stroke. These impairments, associated with acquired amusia, can be highly selective, affecting only music perception (i.e., receptive abilities/functions) or expression (music production abilities), and some patients report that these may dramatically influence their emotional state. The aim of this study wa...
متن کاملVocal Accuracy and Neural Plasticity Following Micromelody-Discrimination Training
BACKGROUND Recent behavioral studies report correlational evidence to suggest that non-musicians with good pitch discrimination sing more accurately than those with poorer auditory skills. However, other studies have reported a dissociation between perceptual and vocal production skills. In order to elucidate the relationship between auditory discrimination skills and vocal accuracy, we adminis...
